Reading lists for all teaching sessions from all seven Faculty programmes are held on the Library Moodle Site and the Library Team are responsible for maintaining these and for ensuring Faculty compliance with UK copyright law in the way that the material is made available to students.
To ensure that all students (including those who are studying part-time or are away from the Faculty for much of the time) have equal access to all readings, electronic books or journal articles should be referenced wherever possible, and in particular for core readings.
** Please see the Reading list guidance box to the right for details on the Annual process of updating readings, Standard reading list format, scans, and information on what to do if you need to amend your readings for a session or send a message to your students about session readings.**
Student feedback is overwhelmingly positive in relation to the online reading lists:
"They are such a lifeline both before and during term, and I don’t know of any other faculties that are so thorough and helpful with the resources put on Moodle." Undergraduate
The structure of Faculty reading lists has also been commended by the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre.
The established process for updating reading lists is as follows:
To ensure that all students (especially those who are studying part-time or away from the Faculty for much of the time) have equal access to all readings, ebooks, online journal articles or scans should be referenced wherever possible, and in particular for core readings.
Session readings should comprise of:
The Education Ebooks Collection is regularly updated with new material. If you have suggestions for new titles, just complete the staff Suggest a Purchase Form. We are also very happy to create new sections in the Education Ebooks Collection to compliment your teaching, so do get in touch with us if this would be helpful. Many reading lists include a link to relevant sections of the Collection as further readings.
* If suitable core readings cannot be found in existing ejournals or ebooks, we may be able to purchase new ebooks or scan material as long as it is if permitted by the UK copyright law (see Scans section below for details).
Example of best practice for reading list format:
The creating, managing and reporting of scanned material requires a significant amount of Library staff time, therefore, wherever possible, please could we ask that you refer to ebooks and earticles in your reading lists. Ebooks can be selected from our Education Ebooks Collection and requests for new purchases can be made via this form.
Prior to creating new scans for reading lists, we will contact you to ensure there are no other existing alternatives. Where a scan is the only option, we will carry out copyright compliance procedures and upload the scan to your reading list on the Library Moodle Site.
The following copyright regulations apply to all scans for teaching:
Please also note that:
We are required by the CLA to keep a record of scans that have already been created and are available to use. Please get in touch if you would like us to send you a list of the scans available for your course.
If you need to make changes to your reading list part way through the year, please contact us (library@educ.cam.ac.uk) and include details of the reading list, URL and exact session that you would like to alter together with full references (in APA style) of any new material you like to add. We will check availability of any new material and quickly update the list on the Library Moodle Site.
Please do not send new readings out via Moodle Announcements as it may cause confusion amongst students and also means that the list will be incomplete/incorrect when updating the following year.
If you wish to remind your students of their readings before a session, please feel free to copy and paste either the URL of the page on the Library Moodle Site or copy the reading list into your announcement.
Please do not send PDFs of any journal articles as this prevents the real usage being recorded which may result in journals that are needed being cancelled.
Please be aware that if you include direct links to electronic resources (articles and ebooks), you may find that students have difficulties accessing them due to the complexities of authentication, especially if off-campus or in schools. It is always preferable to direct them to access readings through their reading list on the Library Moodle Site.
Please do not send new readings out via Moodle Announcements as it may cause confusion amongst students and also means that the list will be incomplete/incorrect when updating the following year.
