Education Library: Guide for Staff: Reading lists

Reading lists

Reading lists for all teaching sessions from all seven Faculty programmes are held on the Library Moodle Site and the Library Team are responsible for maintaining these and for ensuring Faculty compliance with UK copyright law in the way that the material is made available to students.

To ensure that all students (including those who are studying part-time or are away from the Faculty for much of the time) have equal access to all readings, electronic books or journal articles should be referenced wherever possible, and in particular for core readings.

** Please see the Reading list guidance box to the right for details on the Annual process of updating readings, Standard reading list format, scans, and information on what to do if you need to amend your readings for a session or send a message to your students about session readings.**

Praise for reading lists

Student feedback is overwhelmingly positive in relation to the online reading lists:

"They are such a lifeline both before and during term, and I don’t know of any other faculties that are so thorough and helpful with the resources put on Moodle."  Undergraduate

The structure of Faculty reading lists has also been commended by the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre.

Reading list guidance

The established process for updating reading lists is as follows:

  • Route/paper coordinators will be sent a Word document version of last year's list(s) in Easter Term and will be asked to collate any changes to readings for the following year.  Full guidance will be included with the list(s).
  • The route/paper coordinator will ask you to identify and clearly mark any changes you wish to make to readings for your sessions.  This includes any changes to the order of sessions.
    • New additions - yellow highlighted text
    • Deletions - strikethrough any items to delete (please do not delete them from the list)
    • Changes to the order of sessions - add clear notes in coloured text to explain where readings/sessions were previously
    • Please do not use track changes
  • Route/paper coordinators will collate the changes and return the updated list for the whole year to us at library@educ.cam.ac.uk.  If there are any problems concerning availability, accessibility or any copyright issues for the readings you have selected, we will contact you.
  • We will amend the reading list on the Library Moodle site, ready for links to be added from the course Moodle site.
  • Once course sites are updated, we will either add in reading list links or send you the links to add yourselves.

To ensure that all students (especially those who are studying part-time or away from the Faculty for much of the time) have equal access to all readings, ebooks, online journal articles or scans should be referenced wherever possible, and in particular for core readings.

Session readings should comprise of:

  • 2-3 core readings which are electronically available*
  • A limited number of further readings per session (the relevant Library location of further print material and a link to the relevant section of the Education Ebooks Collection can also be included). All core readings will include a link to the electronic resource, but students are expected to locate any further readings for themselves via iDiscover.
  • Further readings can be available electronically or in print in Faculty or Departmental Libraries or the University Library - we will check availability of any new further readings when we update your list.
  • All references should be presented in APA style as per the Faculty Referencing Guide.

The Education Ebooks Collection is regularly updated with new material. If you have suggestions for new titles, just complete the staff Suggest a Purchase Form. We are also very happy to create new sections in the Education Ebooks Collection to compliment your teaching, so do get in touch with us if this would be helpful.  Many reading lists include a link to relevant sections of the Collection as further readings.

* If suitable core readings cannot be found in existing ejournals or ebooks, we may be able to purchase new ebooks or scan material as long as it is if permitted by the UK copyright law (see Scans section below for details).

Example of best practice for reading list format:

The creating, managing and reporting of scanned material requires a significant amount of Library staff time, therefore, wherever possible, please could we ask that you refer to ebooks and earticles in your reading lists. Ebooks can be selected from our Education Ebooks Collection and requests for new purchases can be made via this form.

Prior to creating new scans for reading lists, we will contact you to ensure there are no other existing alternatives. Where a scan is the only option, we will carry out copyright compliance procedures and upload the scan to your reading list on the Library Moodle Site.

The following copyright regulations apply to all scans for teaching:

  • Only 1 chapter of a book or 10% of extracts (whichever is greater) can be scanned for each paper/route
  • Only 1 article per journal issue can be scanned for each paper/route
  • A copy of the book/journal must be held by a Library within the University (note that this does not include electronic material received via legal deposit)
  • The same scan can be used across multiple lists but you must contact the Library Team to arrange this as we are legally required to record all scans and submit an annual return for the Faculty of Education to the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA).

Please also note that:

  • Scanned material can only be hosted on the Library Moodle Site and not on any Course Sites
  • Not all material can be legally scanned. Many non-UK publications are not covered by UK Copyright Law and we are required to check the CLA database before scanning any material
  • We have a 'bank' of scans that can be re-used - please contact us if you would like to be sent a list of these relevant to your course.

We are required by the CLA to keep a record of scans that have already been created and are available to use. Please get in touch if you would like us to send you a list of the scans available for your course.

If you need to make changes to your reading list part way through the year, please contact us (library@educ.cam.ac.uk) and include details of the reading list, URL and exact session that you would like to alter together with full references (in APA style) of any new material you like to add.  We will check availability of any new material and quickly update the list on the Library Moodle Site.

Please do not send new readings out via Moodle Announcements as it may cause confusion amongst students and also means that the list will be incomplete/incorrect when updating the following year.

If you wish to remind your students of their readings before a session, please feel free to copy and paste either the URL of the page on the Library Moodle Site or copy the reading list into your announcement.

Please do not send PDFs of any journal articles as this prevents the real usage being recorded which may result in journals that are needed being cancelled.

Please be aware that if you include direct links to electronic resources (articles and ebooks), you may find that students have difficulties accessing them due to the complexities of authentication, especially if off-campus or in schools. It is always preferable to direct them to access readings through their reading list on the Library Moodle Site.

Please do not send new readings out via Moodle Announcements as it may cause confusion amongst students and also means that the list will be incomplete/incorrect when updating the following year.
