UG CamGuides: Welcome to Cambridge

Get to know the city for your academic and social life

What was in this section?

This section introduced some of the places you will learn in while at Cambridge. It will take time to orientate yourself, learn how long it takes to get from your college to your department, which is the best route and mode of transport. We hope that by the end of the first term, the city will feel like home but do ask peers and staff for help if you ever feel lost or unsure where to go.

The key areas we introduced in this section were:

  • Finding your way around Cambridge - using the University map to explore the city
  • Timetables - helping you find out when and where your contact time is taking place
  • Libraries - knowing about the range of buildings and resources available in Cambridge
  • Clubs, societies and hobbies - introducing the wide range of activities available to you in Cambridge and emphasising the importance of work-life balance.

We recognise that your experience as a student may be different to the scenarios outlined in these guides. Any questions can be directed to library@lib.cam.ac.uk.

We hope that you found the information in this section useful and will return here during the course of your studies to remind yourself about some of the skills you will develop as a student in Cambridge.

You can download a checklist to tick off the pages you have covered, make a note of areas you wish to revisit, or highlight topics you have yet to engage with.
