Pharmacology is the science concerned with the study of drugs and how they work. To pharmacologists, a drug is any chemical agent which produces a recognizable biological effect. Pharmacology is also concerned with the search for new drugs and how they can best be used in the treatment of diseases in both man and animals.
Pharmacology is studied as part of the Natural Sciences Tripos, as well as the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos. Major research areas of the Department of Pharmacology include cell signalling, macromolecular structure, neuroscience, organ systems, and pharmacological intervention in cancer and infectious diseases
