Selwyn College Library: Disability support

Selwyn College Library – support for disabled students

Any of the services listed below are available on request, and we would be happy to discuss any arrangements we can put into place. Please email us at library@sel.cam.ac.uk. Library staff are usually available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

You can find out more about support available from the Cambridge University Libraries Accessibility Service in their accessibility guide.

There is further information about access to and facilities in the Bartlam Library in the guide page on using the library.

Access

The Bartlam Library has level access through a door with card entry, a lift and stairs to the first and second floors, and an accessible toilet on the first floor. There is more information about access in Selwyn’s Accessibility Statement.

Borrowing books

All books and DVDs are loaned initially for 1 week for undergraduates or 4 weeks for postgraduates and they will automatically renew until the end of the year or until another library user requests them. There are no fines for overdue loans.

If your SSD identifies extended library loans as a requirement, you will be able to borrow up to 30 books (or other library items) from Selwyn Library.

If you would like somebody else to be able to borrow books on your behalf, we can set that up on your library account.

Fetching books

We can fetch books from the shelves for you to collect or make other collection or delivery arrangements as required. Please use the library's click and collect form to place requests or email the library.

Food and drink

You are welcome to bring drinks into the library. If you would usually have food with you when you are working, we would recommend that you eat in the library common room, but we are happy to make arrangements on an individual basis.

Hearing loop

We have a hearing loop installed at the welcome desk on the first floor of the library.

One to one support

If you would like us to show you how the printer/copier works, including enlarging text, or if you would like us to show you how to search for books, journal articles, and other resources, you can get in touch and make an appointment by emailing library@sel.cam.ac.uk. Library staff are usually available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Supplies and equipment

Coloured paper: following a specific request, we have pale blue and yellow paper available for use in the printer (stored on or under the table to the left of the printer). If you have a similar type of request, feel free to ask us directly or ask the Disabilities Officer to pass it on to us.

SAD lamps: we also have SAD lamps for use in the library. If you would like to borrow a lamp for an extended period of time, please email us (library@sel.cam.ac.uk).

Reserving a space

If there’s a specific seat or table in the library that you would like to use, we can reserve it for you.

Toilets

There are four toilets on the first floor, including one accessible toilet, and two toilets on the second floor.

Other Cambridge libraries:

Subject libraries and the University Library

We can liaise with other libraries on your behalf, if there is anything we can help with. We can also put you in touch with the Disability Support Contact for any library in Cambridge, or you can contact the Cambridge University Libraries Accessibility Service.

Returning books (to other libraries)

We can return books to other libraries on your behalf.

If there is anything else we can do that would help, let us know by emailing library@sel.cam.ac.uk.
