Data is actually very expansive; any gathered information, facts, or statistics comprise data and all research, therefore, will comprise the assimilation of data to varying extends. Not only will proper management of your data help in your analysis and write up of your thesis, or potential publications, but it actually may be mandatory from either a regulatory or ethical standpoint, depending on the nature of your research and whether or not the data is sensitive or personal (for example, handling patient data for anyone doing research at Addenbrookes), and you might need to comply with GDPR. The University Library has put together a comprehensive Data Management Guide on how to go about creating your data, organising your data, accessing your data, and looking after and sharing your data that covers all of the major aspects of data management, though perhaps most important of all is ensuring that you backup your data along with all of your work to prevent losing (potentially) years of work.
Software is, of course, a vital resource and you can find a more comprehensive treatment of what software is useful and available to you through our companion CamGuide on Software for Academic Use.
