What is the college community?

Free Assorted Book in Library Stock PhotoPhD life at Cambridge broadly unfolds in two main locations: the Department where you work take place, and your College, where you can relax or study.

Once in Cambridge you will soon realise that the College is not just a place to live, it is also a community that you join. Your College is the place where you can socialise, make friends, and receive personal support.

In this 'College Community' section we will introduce you to some of the help and support available at your College in the form of your Tutor, the MCR and pastoral support.

An Introduction to College Communities

Cambridge is a collegiate university, and all of its students - including its PhDs - are members of a college.

Each of Cambridge's 31 colleges has its own unique character, traditions and quirks. Though the extent to which you engage with college life is entirely up to you, it's likely that you'll become attached to your college during your studies - especially if you elect to live in college.
