This section has provided you with information to help you think through what it might mean to be a graduate student in your discipline at Cambridge. The key messages included:

  • There are a variety of different practices - time management, self-directed learning, critical thinking - which are required in all Master's degrees, but exactly how they manifest depends on your subject.
  • A really important thing you can do before you arrive in Cambridge is to try to find out (or re-read carefully) information about your course - how you will be taught and assessed, and what the key dates are.

Skills for OU study - a series of really useful short courses covering everything to do with the development of good academic practices, and lots of information you can access without signing up for the courses. There's also a section specific related to postgraduate study.

The Palgrave Study Skills series has several general and some subject-specific books on developing your academic skills - everything from writing a dissertation proposal to revising for exams. Some of these are quite expensive, but you might find that libraries in Cambridge have copies you can borrow, if you come up early.
