CamGuides: Becoming a Graduate Student

What's next after your Master's?

Having come to Cambridge from another university I didn't quite know how to tackle the job hunt. Meeting the Careers Adviser from Cambridge was amazing. She was helpful, honest, provided me with resources and a clear idea to plan my next step. 10000% would recommend.

Continuation to PhD

Although it might feel as though there's little point thinking beyond your Master's degree until it actually begins, if you're planning to do a PhD, or even just considering it as an option, it's definitely worth spending some time now looking at the deadlines for funding and for applications. The deadlines will almost certainly be considerably earlier than you think.

This excellent resource from the Graduate Office allows you to search for funding opportunities nationally and internationally.

The Careers Service website provides details of support and advice available to you in terms of your future career, and the key skills to develop for effective job-hunting. They have an experienced team of careers advisers to support you while you're in Cambridge and beyond - exploring different options, connecting with employers. You have to register with them to access their support, but this is very straightforward.
