When do I submit my PhD?

Free Student writing in organizer while sitting on picnic rug Stock PhotoGenerally speaking, PhD students are expected to submit their project four years from the admission date if they are a full-time student, or seven years if they are a part-time student.

Once your account is set up, you will find full details for your submission date under "Thesis Submission Details" on the academic tile in your CamSIS self-service. Failure to submit your thesis or dissertation by your submission date without an approved extension will result in your being temporarily withdrawn from your study. In this event, you will be able to apply for reinstatement when your thesis/dissertation is ready for submission for examination, but not to continue your studies.

Find more on the "Withdrawal from Study" section on the University Website.

The Submission Process

What format does my thesis have to be in?

For ease of marking and consistency, all theses submitted at Cambridge must adhere to the following standardised format:

  • written in English - apart from quotations or technical formulae
  • be in a4 portrait format
  • use one-and-a-half spaced type
  • include any photographs or illustrations scanned into the text
  • be saved in the electronic format and naming style specified by your degree committee

You must also include the following in your thesis:

  • a title page - including a full title, full name, college, date of submission and declaration
  • a preface declaration of originality and confirmation of meeting the word count
  • an abstract or summary of your thesis
  • a separate declaration form (and an optional research impact statement)

Once submitted, the degree committee will check it is complete, acknowledge receipt and inform student registry that you have completed your submission. Your CamSIS record will then be updated. You will receive confirmation of the date of your oral examination within six weeks of submitting your thesis.
