UG CamGuides: A Week in the Life

Introduction

The 'week in the life' project was co-created with 11 students currently studying at Cambridge from different disciplines and with different interests. The students created this content in their own voice to represent their own experiences of navigating the Cambridge 'week'.

Varsity

Varsity is one of my favourite parts of my Cambridge life.

Varsity is a student newspaper that’s independent of the University of Cambridge, first founded in the 1940s. It’s a staple of Cambridge life - published every other Friday during term time, copies of the print edition are distributed to all colleges and faculties and handed out in key locations like King’s Parade. Over the years, figures such as King Charles, Amol Rajan, Jeremy Paxman and Germaine Greer have written for Varsity.

Anyone can write for Varsity. You can either pitch a specific article idea, or join one of the sub teams - News, Interviews, Features, Comment, Arts and more. Over my time at Cambridge, I’ve been part of both the News and Interviews section. News is exciting - when stories break or there are important emails sent out by the University, nothing quite compares to the flurry of messages and edits as we try to gather information as quickly as possible. As a News editor, I was able to cover protests against speakers invited to the University, explore the hidden world of Cambridge Drinking Societies, and speak to those marking one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Interviews section is different - there’s less urgency, but it’s equally thrilling. As Interviews Editor, I’ve had the chance to interview people as varied as Marianne Williamson and Ekin-Su from Love Island. I’ve met some wonderful people - weekly meetings in the offices add to the experience of journalism, and our socials, held after we go to print on Thursday evenings, are one of the highlights of my Cambridge week.

If you’re interested in writing or a career in journalism, I can’t recommend it highly enough! Get involved with Varsity.
