Physical Sciences: Finding and using sources

Finding and using sources

Research builds on existing knowledge but in order to do this you need to be able to find the information and use it ethically. Cambridge offers access to a huge range of materials and we know that this can feel overwhelming. The resources in this section will help you to find what you need quickly and efficiently, keep track of what the information you find and use it ethically in your own work.

Finding resources

Finding resources graphicThe University of Cambridge subscribes to a range of resources both in print and online which means potentially millions of items for you to search. It can sometimes be hard to locate a particular resource you have been told to read such as a book or journal article and even more overwhelming when you are finding resources yourself. How do you find what you need when you need it? And once you've found resources, how do you know they will be any good for your project? The resources in this section will help you to find your way around both the physical and digital libraries and locate the best resources for your work.

Referencing

ReferencingGood research builds on existing knowledge to create new information. Whatever topic you are working on it's important that you credit the ideas of others that you use in your own work. There are many different referencing systems you can use and each is subtly different. Your department is likely to recommend a particular referencing style so it's important to make sure this is the one you use. Keeping track of the materials you are using as you conduct your research will save you a lot of time and hassle when it comes to writing up but there is lots of help available to get you into good habits.

Academic integrity

Academic integrityAcademic integrity is an important but often misunderstood part of scholarship. Essentially it means acting ethically and honestly in all parts of the academic process from avoiding plagiarism to developing good academic writing strategies. It underpins every part of the research process and it is important that all students, researchers and staff familiarise themselves with what is expected of them. The resources in this section will help you to develop good ethical practices.
