Accessing the Library

Swipecard access is needed to access the Library.

If you can't make it to the Library itself, many electronic resources are available and we are always very happy to assist via email with any questions. While we hope that our services will continue to run as normal, please refer to the page Library services during COVID-19 for up-to-date general information, and any changes, on services for Biological Sciences and beyond.

If you have a disability or injury that affects your use of the library, please let us know, in advance where possible, of any assistance you need.

Please note that there is another library associated  with the Department which also hold material of interest. The Cory and Herbarium Library is located in the Sainsbury Laboratory in the Botanic Garden. An appointment must usually be made to visit. Visitors to the Cory and Herbarium Library need to contact

Journals and Electronic Resources

Recommendations for journals and electronic resources can be made to the Plant Sciences Library via email or directly to the main University Library via their Recommendation for Acquisition webpage.

About the Plant Sciences Library

The Plant Sciences Library is an excellent resource for all students and staff and is open to all members of the Plant Sciences Department, including Part II and Postgraduate students.

The Library offers:

  • Bookable study space 
  • Wi-fi throughout the area
  • Colour printing and copying, as well as free scanning, all run via the University's DS-Print system
  • Legal Deposit PC to access restricted online items

The Plant Sciences Library (in the main building of the Department of Plant Sciences), and the separate Cory and Herbarium Libraries (in the Sainsbury Laboratory in the Botanic Garden), both hold a wide range of specialist material, some of which is unique.

Examples of specialist items in the 'main' Plant Sciences Library:

  • Reading List items 
  • Wide range of books on ecology, both as a general subject and by area or biome
  • Background data for early surveys, eg British flora (Hunnybun); Wicken Fen (Godwin); Rock-soil flora of Lincolnshire (Woodruffe-Peacock)

How to borrow

Department members, including Part II and postgraduate students in Plant Sciences, can borrow books from the Plant Sciences Library. When you've found your book in the Library, use the online borrowing form to record your loan and a member of staff will add it to your borrowing record.
