Opening Hours and Access Information

The Library is open for staff of the Botanic Gardens and the Sainsbury Laboratory. To access, you will need to ask for an access pass at the main SLCU reception. 

Access may be permitted for other readers, please direct your request to the Cory and Herbarium Librarian in the first instance.

Recommending through other Libraries

Remember that you can also recommend items at your College Library, the Moore Library, or the University Library.

Journals and Electronic Resources

Recommendations for journals and electronic resources can be made to the Biological Sciences Libraries Team via email or directly to the main University Library via their Recommendation for Acquisition webpage.

About the Library

The Library house a significant collection including:

  • Horticultural reference works, including practical horticulture,
  • Floras by geographical area,
  • Works on taxonomy and systematics, including nineteenth century works,
  • Serials related to taxonomy and horticulture,
  • The Simpson Collection of UK floras,
  • The Cory collection of early botanical and horticultural works.

Services and Facilities

The Cory Special Collections are valuable and parts of them are kept in locked shelving. If you need to access these, please contact us in the first instance.

Some parts of the collection can be borrowed, but the Simpson and Cory Special Collections cannot be removed from the Library. Items that are borrowed must be signed out using our online booking form. A paper-based sign-out sheet is also provided near the door, if you are not able to use the online form at the time of borrowing.

Please note, the Library currently has no scanning/ copying facilities.
