Library Essentials

Welcome to Cambridge University Libraries 

Cambridge University Libraries consists of college libraries, faculty and department libraries and the main University Library (UL). All have physical spaces for studying and books to borrow. The services we offer go beyond the spaces you see, it's also the online library resources, special collections, archives, digital services, open access and teams supporting teaching and research. 

This guide is for new students and provides an overview of the essential information you need as you begin your first term. The guide covers:-

  • Libraries: the different types of library in Cambridge and what to expect; essentially in all libraries you'll find space to study and friendly, helpful staff.
  • The library catalogue, called iDiscover, with detailed guides to show how it works.
  • Borrowing: an explanation of the rules around borrowing books.
  • Reading Lists Online: demonstrates how online reading lists operate.
  • Ebooks and Eresources: signposts information on the numerous online resources you have access to.
  • Accessibility: provides information and advice about accessible library services
  • For all the skills and support that libraries across Cambridge can provide self-enrol on this catalogue of study skills
