Most of the works created or used by researchers will be protected by some form of copyright. However what many researchers fail to realise is that each individual work is made up of different layers of rights which have their own limits and crucially, their own expiry dates. These layers exist as multiple people have been involved in their creation, from authors to artists to publishers. The video below explains how this works in practice.
Look at some examples of items in copyright such as a book, a sound recording or a DVD. How many different layers of copyright can you identify in each one? How long do the rights in each layer last?
