Getting started with the Medical Library

Here are a few steps to get you started with the Medical Library

  • To register for the Medical Library, please fill in the registration form. Once this is complete, please email the library (library@medschl.cam.ac.uk) to notify us that you have registered. Please use your NHS email address, and include your job role and contract end date. We will then complete the registration process.
  • If you think you were previously registered with the library, please email us first before completing a new registration form. We will check if your details are current, and update your membership.
  • Follow these step-by-step instructions on how to set up your new password and how to add multi-factor verification to your account. This will enable you to access UniOfCam-Guest wifi. You will need to set up multifactor authentication if you wish to request printed books via iDiscover
  • Use iDiscover to search for print books to borrow. If you have set up your password and multi-factor verfication, you will be able to request books to borrow if another user has borrowed the book.
  • Register for OpenAthens (to access online material such as journal articles, guidelines, databases and ebooks). Please use your NHS email address when registering. If you had an OpenAthens account with a previous Trust, please email the library and we will arrange for your account to be transferred.
  • Search for online material via the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. This works best when you are logged in with OpenAthens, which will enable you to access full-text PDFs or request PDFs if they are not immediately available.
  • Register with BMJ Best Practice to access this free point-of-care tool (an OpenAthens account is required).

Room bookings

There are pods which are available in the library for attending online meetings. In addition, we have a bookable training room (with lectern and projector), and an eight-seater meeting room. These spaces can be booked by contacting room-booking@medschl.cam.ac.uk and providing the booking title, date, start and end time, number of people attending and contact details.

Finding the evidence

There are a number of resources available to you as a starting point for your literature search. These will provide guidelines, journal articles, book chapters and more to help you answer your research or clinical question.

  • Use the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub as the starting point for any search (this works best when logged in with OpenAthens).
  • You can access specific databases (under 'In Depth Searching'), clinical decision making tools, or ebooks and grey literature (under 'Other Resources) via the front page of the Knowledge and Library Hub.
  • Links to guides and tutorial videos are available in the 'Search a Topic' section of this LibGuide (go to the 'Top tips guides and videos' box).
  • Training and support is also available -- please email the library's training team to discuss your options.
