Electronic Legal Deposit: Using ePUBs

Using ePUBs

The vast majority of e-books received under Legal Deposit come in ePUB format. Likewise, the great majority of e-journals (and other serial publications) come in PDF format. This difference is important as the format dictates the tools and functions available to you in each case.

Differentiating an ePUB from a PDF

The easiest way to differentiate an ePUB from a PDF within the eLD player is to look at the blue ribbon near the top of the screen. If you see the ‘Automatic Zoom’ function icon below the blue ribbon then you are looking at a PDF:

Navigating an ePUB
ePUBs lack fixed page numbers and the text will ‘reflow’ to fit the viewing window. When viewing an ePUB within the new player, it’s important to first configure the interface to ensure that the text will also reflow when the sidebars are open, making it easier to navigate the document. This can be done via the settings icon (  ) located in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure the box is ticked beside the ‘Reflow text when sidebars are open’ option:

The next couple of images explain the tools and functionality available for ePUBs within the new player. Tools/icons that are working properly will be highlighted using blue solid lines. Tool/icons that are not working properly will be highlighted by red dotted lines

Keyword searching in an ePUB
Keyword searching is not currently supported. The ‘Ctrl F’ keyboard shortcut is also unavailable. If the document includes a table of contents, it may be possible to skip forward and backwards to different sections or chapters.
