The University of Cambridge has a long and vibrant tradition of researching European History. Our research spans the breadth and depth of Europe from the 18th century to the 21st, from the Caucasus to the Atlantic, from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, and beyond. Our interests are diverse, but all of us share a commitment to looking at the history of Europe beyond national boundaries. In recent years, our research has continued to address essential longstanding issues in the lives of Europeans while also expanding to understanding Europe's contested position within the wider world.
Complimenting this, Cambridge University Libraries boasts a large and varied collection of both physical and digital resources to help you in your studies. This not only includes books but online databases, newspapers, official publications, journals, and much more. Here in the Seeley, texts on Modern European History can be found across the library, though the following sections in the Main Library may be of specific interest; 'DAW Central Europe', 'DB Austria - Liechtenstein - Hungary - Czechoslovakia', 'DC France - Andorra - Monaco', 'DD Germany', 'DF Greece', 'DG Italy - Malta', 'DH Low Countries - Benelux Countries', 'DP Spain -Portugal', 'DQ Switzerland',' DR Balkan Peninsula', '7 - Modern European History (i.e., from 1450)', and '10 - European Economic & Social History'. We also hold the library collections of the Land Economy Department, and Social and Political Sciences (SPS) which itself includes material focusing on POLIS and Sociology courses, and all together hold a range of texts on European politics, literature, society, law, economics and more.
You also have access to the University Library (UL), where the classmark range 500-698 covers Geography and History and is then organised by region, all Faculty Department Libraries (FDLs), and your own College Library, so explore these for useful books and resources as well.
As with any library, searching on iDiscover for the text, journal or database that you require is a good starting point, and if you have any questions then please reach out to a member of staff who would be happy to assist.
