Education Library: Academic & Professional Uses of Social Media: Ethics & Professional Practice

Ethics

Be professional and polite
Think before you post - what goes online, stays online!  Even if you delete content it can often still be found elsewhere online.  If you are associated with an institution such as a University, remember that what you post will reflect on both your own reputation and that of your institution.
Be respectful of others work
Some people may not wish to have their work such as presentation slides or in progress works posted online. If a presenter asks for their slides not to be photographed and posted online this must be respected. It is important to be polite when discussing the work of others.
Do not post content/resources from lectures, or discuss meetings such as supervisions online without prior consent from those involved. This includes both content and the names of those taking part.
Credit sources
If you are posting a link to something interesting or discussing another person’s ideas, make sure to credit them; if they have a twitter account you can tag them in your post.
Credit images
Services such as Flickr can be used to find creative commons pictures that can be used in presentations and blog posts. Remember to pay attentions to their rules of use and credit the photographer with the photo's URL or a direct link. More information about image credit can be found here.
Stay safe
Do not give out personal details, account numbers or usernames online.

For teachers

Teachers are expected to maintain a professional level of moral and ethical behaviour and model these expectations to their students.  Students are savvy in the use of online social media and what teachers post online can be accessed by students.

Many teaching professionals prefer to have their personal social media presence private or hidden, however, if you have public profiles you must ensure that all content posted is appropriate. This includes usernames and profile pictures.
