ArchiveSearch: Filter/ Refine

Filtering and refining

Search results are displayed by ArchiveSearch in order of relevance by default.

Icons in the left hand column indicate the type of record retrieved (e.g. Fonds, File, Person, Organization, Subject…).

Some key information is included in the search result display (Title, Reference Code, Scope and Contents, Dates and the name of the repository) click on a record to view further information about it (e.g. conditions of access).

Filtering

ArchiveSearch provides various ways to filter sets of records

  • by adding additional search terms
  • by adding years (to limit a search to the dates covered by the material)
  • by using the clickable links in the right hand box to limit results to a specific repository, type of record (‘top level’ description or archival record), subject or name.

Filters can be removed by clicking the ‘x’ icon next to them.

Sorting

By relevance

By default results are sorted with the most relevant first. Various factors are taken into account when deciding relevance. When searching for two (or more) keywords, all records matching either are returned, but those containing both in close proximity are listed first. For an example of this, try a search for "general strike".

By title

Results can also be sorted by title (ascending or descending).

By year

Results can also be sorted by year (ascending or descending).
