Economics: Bloomberg

The Bloomberg Terminal

Bloomberg is a global financial database, widely used in the professional and academic community.

It can be used to find a vast range of real-time market data, and also offers analytical tools and aggregated financial news.

Bloomberg has data on more than 5 million bonds, equities, commodities, currencies and funds, and provides information on all listed companies. It also has access to a variety of ESG data.

Access

Bloomberg can be accessed on one dedicated terminal within the Marshall Library. Remote access is not available.

Use of the Marshall Library's Bloomberg terminal is restricted to current students and staff of the Economics Faculty.

Bloomberg is licensed to the Marshal Library under an academic subscription and may be used only for non-commercial purposes.

Booking

Please use the Marshall Library Bloomberg Booking Form to book a session on the library terminalScroll to the bottom of the form to see a calendar indicating existing bookings.

You can only use the terminal during Marshall Library Opening Hours – please don’t attempt to book outside these times. You will receive an email from library staff when your booking has been confirmed.

On arrival for your session, please report to the issue desk. Each time you use the terminal, library staff will need to log in to provide you with access.

First-time users will also need to set up a personal Bloomberg account with a username and password.

Please ensure that you log out at the end of your session and notify library staff that you have finished.

Keyboard

The Bloomberg terminal is easily identified by its unusual keyboard, designed to provide quick access to information. There is a headphone jack located at the back of the keyboard for listening to audio.

Excel

Bloomberg has an Office API which means you can download and manipulate data using Excel. Type XLTP <GO> to access a library of Excel templates.

Please think carefully before downloading data to Excel to avoid hitting the data download limit.

Data Limit

The Bloomberg terminal has a monthly data download limit which is remotely enforced by Bloomberg. When the terminal has reached its limit users will see the #N/A LIMIT error message in Excel.

When this limit is reached no further data can be downloaded by any user on the terminal for the rest of the month and the limit will only reset on the first day of the following month. No information whatsoever is provided by Bloomberg to indicate how close the terminal is to reaching its monthly limit.

Please be considerate of other users and download only data that you really need.  Avoid bulk data downloads and use other data sources wherever possible, including LSEG Workspace.
