Zero Contact Library Services: Returning library books

We are grateful to receive returned books from all library users, and especially those who are graduating in the near future. There are several options available to you whether you are in Cambridge or elsewhere.

The University Library team will be happy to accept posted library books from all Cambridge libraries, and will distribute them to the home library as soon as it is feasible to do so. Books you have returned may subsequently remain on your library account for some time after you have returned them.

Some libraries are offering book returns in person

Some libraries are able to recieve books in person, but they may require you to book an appointment to do so. Check Faculty and Departmental library websites from here: https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/using-library/faculty-and-department-libraries.

You can check other library websites from here: https://www.libraries.cam.ac.uk/libraries-map

The University Library can only accept returned UL books through the drop box or by post.

Drop Boxes

There are two drop boxes on the Sidgwick Site for returning books borrowed from participating Sidgwick site libraries.

The Medical Library and Moore Library have a dropbox each for returning books from any Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Libraries.

For returning University Library (UL) books, there is a drop box at the foot of the UL steps.

Books returned to the drop boxes may take a short while to be removed from your account.

Please check with the holding library of your book how your book should be returned. You can find quick links here.

University Library books can be returned by post to:

Cambridge University Library
West Road
Cambridge
CB3 9DR

We recommend using a tracked service.

If you are a recent graduate, member of staff or visiting scholar in the UK who has now left the University and are unable to return to Cambridge, you can request a pre-paid returns label to return your books by freepost. You can post items from the UL, Faculty and Department libraries and colleges to this address.
